People often ask about the best way to see Paris, and I always say: 'use your feet, and just keep walking.' Paris is in a way quite a compact city and an ideal way to get around to many of the famous sights is simply on your own steam. If it is your first time to visit, I would recommend that for an overall view of what's what, and where everything can be found, taking a city bus tour is the perfect means to familarise yourself with Paris.

But as I say, walking is best. Around every street corner you can find something new, different and surprising, and when you walk you get to see things close up. Or something you would otherwise have missed if you had taken the metro or the bus instead. Say you are at point 'A' and want to go to point 'B', don't just make for the nearest metro station. Take a look at your guide and map. Judge the distance from where you are to where you want to go. Is it within reasonable walking distance? Have you got the time to stroll there leisurely? More often than not you will find that it is easy to traverse from one point of interest to another without any difficulty. If you do, chances are that as you pass through the Paris streets you will be delighted that you decided on the healthy and more pleasant alternative to get to your destination.

Paris and the end of the Winter sales

For canny shoppers there is still time to grab a bargain in the big stores before the end of the winter sales.

Just as we are about to put January aside, it's time to post my last featured offer for Paris hotels deals and promotions. It may be low season, but people still come to visit Paris all year round. Not in the same numbers as in the summer, of course, but people make a decision to come when the time and opportunity is available to them, and they don't seem to mind that the city is a little colder, a little quieter and lacks some of the lustre of the sunny months.

But that is not all bad. It's quieter .... so now it is far easier to visit many of the popular attractions like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower without interminable lines and throngs of tourists. It may be colder, but you certainly won't have to be standing out in it for long when it comes to queuing. Now that is a distinct advantage, and something to be considered if you are hesitating or uncertainly toying with the thought of visiting at this time of year.

Also remember that Paris is the city of romance - in my book anyhow - and what better place to spend Valentine's Day other than in beautiful Paris where affectionate hearts seem to be at one with the soul of the city. Just watch young lovers - they are as much part of the city landscape as any monument, building or park. I think, if romance is in your mind, then you couldn't choose a better destination.

Oh, yes. Shops ... shops and sales. February brings the end of the winter sales. There is time to still get a bargain. Printemps, Galeries Lafayette and the other major stores all have big markdowns and you could find exactly what you are looking for at prices that reduce to genuine cost-cut deals. Keen shoppers can snipe a sizeable bag-full. I write with enthusiasm, but in truth I am dragged and coerced through so many stores during the sales by my wife's trance-like compulsion for shopping that I feel I'm being led around by halter and reins.

But don't let my dubious feelings on the matter detract from your potential enjoyment. Fun is where you find it. It's just that for me, at least, you can get too much of a good thing .... and I hasten to add that whatever good there is can be best appreciated by a serial mega-shopper like my wife, but not by me.

The Eiffel Tower - from Eyesore to Icon

Given the fame and popularity of the Eiffel Tower it is strange to think that so many people - among then famed writers and artists - were vehemently opposed to and campaigned strongly against its construction. It was only intended to be a temporary affair built in the late 1880's to commemorate the French Revolutions centenary. But a century on, the 984 foot tall 'temporary' structure still stands and is now France's most famous and recognisable icon.

So the eyesore that caused a public outcry once amongst conservative Parisians has now found total acceptance. It is visited by thousands every year and its emblematic shape has been depicted in every conceivable type of souvenir that can be found on sale. One wonders what the renowned French writer, Guy de Maupassant would make of it all. He was an ardent opponent of the tower, but reportedly ate in it's old restaurant daily. His reason ...... it was the only place in Paris where he could sit and relax, and not have to look at the tower.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Notre Dame Cathedral, a great icon of French gothic architecture.

I spoke to an American friend the other day who has been staying here in Paris since last May. She was quite ecstatic as she had just managed to pay her first proper visit to Notre Dame cathedral. She had tried twice before, but the long lines put her off on both earlier occasions. But this time of year the crowds are sparser and visiting the city's popular attractions is a much easier undertaking.

Notre Dame is one of the great architectural and religious icons of Paris. For anyone who manages to scale the daunting climb to the Chimera Gallery - all 255 steps - they are rewarded with the dramatic sense evoked by the belfry, the narrow passages, gothic carvings and slightly unnerving view of the gargoyles that provoke an uneasy feeling that Quasimodo may just appear from somewhere out of the shadows.

Judging from her excited descriptions of all she saw, I think my American friend would have made a poor Esmerelda. She would have been far too absorbed by the sights of Notre Dame to have paid a blind bit of notice to the carry-on of old humpy. And who could blame her? After quite a history of desecration, restoration, breaking down and building up, this renowned cathedral, beloved of the Parisians, has so may exquisite gems to enthrall the visitor.

I recommend that you view them all. Something best done based at close quarters in one of the many excellent Paris city centre hotels. Leading me in perfect manner to this post's feature offer ....

Cantana for President, and me for the Pub

This year may prove to be very interesting. Eric Cantana it appears wants to stand for the presedential elections later this year. He needs 500 signatures, and has written to mayors throughout France for support. Cantana says his campaign is not really about being elected president. His aim instead is to highlight the need for better social housing - this being an acknowledged problem here in France.

Some weighty matters to dwell on there, but with the chill of a January night approaching I think I will eschew any rumination on deep political issues and opt instead for the warmth of a good Parisian cafe and the cheery pleasure of a delightful drink. Best of luck to Cantana, and all that, but that is how it is at this present moment. Social conscience must get a cold shoulder when all I need now is to get warm.

With the build up to the Christmas period, many people will be too busy to find time for a break away from the long list of things-to-do in preparation for the seasonal holidays. In fact, one of the nicest thing about these markets is the beautiful, enticing aroma of mulled wine that wafts through the bracing winter air. It is incredibly tempting, and I never resist.

Yet, and it's something we can't forget, this time is really special for children. Even if the French were slow at first to accept the magic that Disney made with their fabulous theme park, the argument is over now. Without a doubt, Disneyland Resort Paris has brought something unique here, and with each passing year its admirers grow, as people - even conservative Parisians - have learned to appreciate just what a special place has been created here. Naturally, for the kids there was never any argument. They just loved it from the very beginning.

M&S comes back to Paris

I think there is reason to celebrate - in fact, two good reasons to celebrate. First, we have posted the latest money saving discounts for hotels near the Champs Elysees - as always, bringing you the best offers available for Paris visitors. And second, the great news that after a 10 year absence Marks and Spencers has come back to Paris ...... to be exact, to the Champs Elysees.

To the dismay of many Parisian faithful, a decade ago M&S had made a swift departure from the city in an effort to cut losses in its wider European operations. But that rupture was healed on Thursday with the opening of its spanking new store on France's most famous street, and with the news that even more, bigger stores are on the way following a comprehensive market rethink on its continental sales strategy.

Prices will be about 10 percent dearer at the new Paris store, but who cares if those devotees amongst us can get easier access to our favorite British goods. Like many, I can hardly wait until the bigger, better stocked stores open.

The macabre attraction of Pere Lachaise Cemetery

I've just returned from visiting the Pere Lachaise Cemetery with a friend who has come to visit for a few days. As a tourist destination, I suppose it is a bit macabre to visit a city cemetery, but this particular cemetery is famous for the venerable individuals who have found their lasting resting place here.

To name a few .... Edit Piaf, Chopin, Gertrude Stein, Moliere, Bizet and Isadora Duncan. Two of the most notable names whose graves are most often visited are those of the American rock singer Jim Morrison and that of the great wit and literary genius Oscar Wilde. The fame and notoriety they had in life seems to have persisted in death if the endless stream of visitors to their burial sites is anything to go by.

If you are planning to join the thousands that visit, you could consider basing yourself in the nearby Montmarte area, famed for the Sacre Coeur, its atmospheric warren of streets and its resident artists. Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn comes to Paris screens

Two months before it is seen in US cinemas, Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” will open in France to huge anticipation from the thousands of devoted French fans of the famous cartoon character. The publicity for the event is so enormous that Speilberg himself was in Paris last week at the Gare du Nord to wave off a specially customised Tintin train travelling to Brussels.

Tintin is a boy reporter who journeys with his friends throughout the world in an unending series of adventures. The character was created in 1929 by the Belgian artist Herge.Over 300 million copies of the famous comic books have been sold, and the intense interest in everything Tintin is testament to the enduring cross-generation popularity of the stories.

This is Hollywood's first stab at the Tintin tale, and we must all wait to see how well Speilberg and Co. have succeeded. For those in the US and UK who have never heard before of the intrepid Belgian wonder-boy, then expect to get a bit more acquainted with him as well as characters such as Captain Haddock and Omar Ben Salaad.

Nicolas Sarkozy is the first French president to have the distinction of having a baby as holder of the office and today has spoke of the "profound happiness" both he nad his wife Carla feel at the birth of their new baby girl. Very few details have been given in relation to the birth as the French president endeavoured to maintain a cloak of privacy from the attention of the prying media.

The British Prime Minister David Cameron has related the good wishes of both himself and his wife Samantha to the happy couple saying that they were thrilled to hear the news.

Some of President Sarkozy's close political associates are hoping that the new arrival and the image of the president as an active parent may help soften his image in the eyes of the public. However, if previous experience is anything to go by, it is hardly likely that we are going to witness any sudden dramatic change in the French leader's often off-putting persona.

Paris in October - latest deals for visitors

If you are in Paris at the moment or are planning to come sometime this month of October, you will notice the difference in the atmosphere from the hectic Summer months. Essentially, it's quieter. Less tourists, and so less crowds at the city's principal tourists hot spots. That in turn means, of course, less queues and a lot less time waiting around.

If you are descending on the shops with the purpose of slashing out in all directions with a purse-full of major credit cards, you will be delighted to hear that you will have more of the place to yourself because the crowds in the shopping districts have at this stage also shrunk noticeably.

Some people may moan a little that Paris in October is a little wetter and cooler. And so it is .... and so what. You will end up paying for the decision in extra travel costs and travel time. But if your focus is Disneyand Resort, then staying there in any of the hotels near Disneyland Paris or in Val d'Europe is fine. In fact, it is ideal.

There is so much to see in Paris - so much to marvel at, it can be hard for the visitor to know where to begin. Suffice to say, enjoying your day - in your own way, at your own pace - is best, rather than scurrying around trying to keep up to speed with the dictates of some guide which says - 'you must see this: you must see that.' Simply be aware of what there is to see, take notice of some good advice, and then do your own thing at your leisure. That way, you will have much less stress, and your Paris experience will be all the more memorable, and unique to you.
