Notre Dame Cathedral has an inspiring
beauty as it dominates the Ile de la Cite. You could say this is
where it all started - Paris that is ....all the way back to about
250BC when the Lutetia settlement took centre stage on this island on
the Seine. Its character evolved over the centuries to where we are
today with this magnificent cathedral that seems so perfectly placed
right in the very centre of Paris.
After you have paid a reverential
visit and steeped yourself in its eventful history, you can easily
choose to whizz along the metro to Abbesses station to explore
Montmartre and another famous church, the Sacre Coeur. Here you have
moved from the island to Paris's highest hill where you will gaze
over some spectacular city views that truly make a memorable vista of
this great metropolis. But the basilica in itself would be
attraction enough and there is much to marvel at, chief among which
is the Great Mosaic of Christ on the chancel vault.
But the entire Montmartre area is
special. It is often said it has the feel of a French village with
its alleys, narrow winding streets, stone stairways, enticing shops
as well as many cosy pubs and restaurants. The atmosphere is so
unique, you might just think: I wouldn't mind staying here.
And many people think the same. So
much so that hotel stays in Montmartre regularly pops up in our
special Paris hotels deals. And no surprise, here it is again .....
