A walk through the Latin district will
soon bring you in contact with the oldest church in the city, the
Church of St-Germaine-des-Pres. It has its origins all the way back
to 542 when the church was built to house a relic of the true cross
and developed in time to become a Benedictine abbey of some
considerable influence. The church was devastated during the time of
the French revolution, and most of it was burned out in 1794.
What you see now are the results of the
reconstructive work carried out in the 19th century. A
visit will give you the opportunity to explore its interesting
history and discover many of its impressive features. It will also
give you the chance to experience its striking medieval atmosphere,
which even if it is not talked about by tour guides, you can
certainly sense after some quiet moments inside.
